Hospice Volunteers

Your Heart. Their Comfort. Life's Most Sacred Moments.

Every day, families across our community face life’s most profound journey. In these tender moments, when medical treatments give way to comfort and connection, something extraordinary happens, volunteers like you step forward to ensure no one walks this path alone. Imagine the difference you can make: a gentle presence that transforms anxiety into peace, a listening ear that turns isolation into connection, a caring heart that brings dignity to life’s final chapters, and a moment of respite that gives exhausted caregivers renewed strength.

At ViaQuest Hospice, our volunteers don’t just help, they become beacons of hope, comfort, and unwavering human compassion. When words fall short and medical care reaches its limits, your presence speaks volumes. You become part of stories that matter, moments that heal, and memories that families treasure forever. This isn’t just volunteering. This is answering one of life’s most sacred callings.

Volunteer Opportunities

Where Your Compassion Finds Its Home
Every volunteer brings unique gifts, experiences, and availability to our team. Whether you're drawn to direct patient care, prefer behind-the-scenes support, or want to use specialized skills, we have meaningful opportunities that match your interests and schedule. Explore the roles below and discover how your particular talents can make a difference in someone's life.
Direct Patient Care Roles
Companionship and Emotional Support

Visit with the patient to provide support and a listening ear. Offer comfort through conversation, reading aloud, sharing hobbies, or simply being present. Providing a listening ear and friendly conversation can open the path for people to talk honestly about their questions, concerns, and fears.

Legacy and Life Review Projects

Help write or record the patient’s life story. Assist patients in creating meaningful legacy projects, photo albums, letters to loved ones, or documenting their life experiences for future generations.

Respite Care for Families

Volunteers may assist with shopping or light household tasks and provide much-needed respite for caregivers. Give family caregivers essential breaks while ensuring patients receive attentive care and companionship.

Special Skills and Therapies

Volunteers with the required certification may provide massage therapy, aromatherapy, or therapeutic touch. Bilingual volunteers can help by interpreting for patients who do not speak English.

Administrative and Support Roles
Office and Clerical Support

Volunteers fill roles that range from direct contact with patients to providing clerical and fundraising support for the organization. Help with data entry, filing, answering phones, mailings, and other administrative tasks that keep our organization running smoothly.

Event Planning and Fundraising

Support community events, awareness campaigns, fundraising activities, and volunteer appreciation gatherings. Use your organizational skills to help us reach more families in need.

Bereavement Support

An experienced patient support volunteer may take additional training to become a bereavement volunteer. After additional training, support grieving families through phone calls, support groups, and memorial services.

Transportation Assistance

Help patients get to medical appointments or social activities when family members aren’t available. Ensure no one misses important care due to transportation barriers.

Building Confident Volunteers

Flexible Training Options:

We understand the demanding schedules of our volunteers and have devised classroom and online training options to accommodate the busiest of people. Choose from:

  • Weekend intensive training sessions
  • Evening classes spread over several weeks

Volunteer Requirements

We believe that anyone with a caring heart can become an effective hospice volunteer. Our requirements are designed to ensure both volunteer and patient safety while maintaining the highest standards of care. These guidelines help us match you with the right opportunities and provide the support you need to make a meaningful difference.

Don’t worry if you don’t meet every qualification perfectly—we’re here to guide you through the process and help you succeed. Many of our most valued volunteers came to us with no prior healthcare experience, just a desire to serve others during life’s most precious moments. What matters most is your compassion, reliability, and willingness to learn. We’ll provide everything else you need to become a confident, well-prepared member of our volunteer team.

"Volunteering with ViaQuest Hospice has taught me so much about courage, grace, and what it means to truly live. The families I've worked with have given me far more than I could ever give them."

General Inpatient Care (GIP)

Covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and many private insurance plans, this level involves moving you to a contracted hospital, hospice house, inpatient unit, or specialized nursing facility bed. This is used for acute symptom management that cannot be effectively achieved in your home setting, with treatment strictly focused on symptoms related to your hospice diagnosis, demonstrating our determination in ensuring optimal comfort and peaceful transitions.

Inpatient Respite Care (IRC)

Provided at a contracted nursing facility for up to five days, Inpatient Respite Care offers temporary relief for your primary caregiver—giving them the rest they need while ensuring you receive continuous expert hospice care. This level of care offers pure relief and peace of mind for families.

Continuous Home Care (CHC)

When a patient experiences a period of crisis with severe symptoms (such as uncontrolled pain or acute shortness of breath), Continuous Home Care can be provided. This involves a higher level of skilled nursing care delivered continuously in the home for a short period (typically 8-24 hours per day) until the crisis is resolved, showcasing our team’s resolute commitment and dedication to restoring comfort and stability.

Routine Home Care (RHC)

This is the most common level of hospice care, provided in the patient’s chosen residence—your own home, a nursing facility, an assisted living facility, or a hospice house. It includes intermittent visits from our hospice team (nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, volunteers) to provide symptom management, personal care, emotional support, and education for caregivers, delivered with gentle guidance and a focus on maximizing daily comfort and quality of life in familiar surroundings.
